American Medical Association (AMA) is the largest association of medical doctors and medical students in the United States. The AMA's mission is to promote the art and science of medicine for the betterment of the public health, to advance the interests of physicians and their patients, to promote public health, to lobby for legislation favorable to physicians and patients, and to raise money for medical education. It also publishes the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), which has the largest circulation of any weekly medical journal in the world, nine medical specialty journals,and a weekly newspaper for physicians, the American Medical News.

The affiliated American Medical Association Alliance is an organization of physicians and their spouses that is working to support family medicine and to build healthy communities. In 1996, the alliance launched the Stop America's Violence Everywhere (SAVE) program.

The AMA Physician Specialty Codes are a standard in the United States for identifying physician and practice specialties.

The AMA's(American Medical Association) mission statement proclaims:

"We are the Voice of the American Medical Profession".

"We are the partnership of physicians and their professional associations dedicated to promoting the art and science of medicine and the betterment of public health".

"We serve the physicians and their patients by establishing and promoting ethical, educational, and clinical standards for the medical profession and by advocating for the highest principle of all--the integrity of the physician/patient relationship."
